How to Build the Best Blanket Fort Ever!

1. The first and foremost step is to gather materials. Send your kids on a scavenger hunt around the house to find blankets and pillows and gather chairs from the kitchen. The two key ingredients for a good blanket fort? Couch cushions and chip clips. Couch cushions are much more effective than pillows because they have weight to them and cover a large surface area. To properly secure your blanket fort, it is best to have chip clips to clip the blanket to the back of a chair, or to clip blankets together.  

2. Once you have all of the supplies for your blanket fort, the fun part begins, you get to design the layout! You’ll want the area underneath the fort to be large enough to fit all of you, so make sure you take that into account when drawing up a floor plan. Have your kids come up with the ideas first and feel free to try some out even if they don’t work, that’s how we learn! Once you’ve established the base structure, grab pillows or a playmat for the bottom, make it as comfy as possible! 

3. Once you have your fort set up, you need to create the right ambiance. To do this, find some sort of light source. This could be a flashlight, fairy lights, or glow in the dark connectors. Grab easy and mess free snacks from the kitchen. You can even purchase a fancy snack caddy ahead of time, here is one of our favorites! Have the kids grab their favorite storybooks (such as our upcoming book, Flavors of the World) and toys to inspire imaginative play. 

4. Finally, turn off the lights, turn on your flashlight, and crawl into your fort!
